San Luis and the Farmer's Market

Tonight we drove up to San Luis Obispo to attend the Farmer's Market on Higuera Street.  This is a weekly event, 52 weeks a year. (minus those exceptions, of course)  It takes place every Thursday evening, except Thanksgiving or when it is raining.  Some describe the lively event as a street fair as well as the Farmer's Market.
We took this photo of Higuera Street in downtown San Luis on the day we were up there to see the mission.  I knew it would be dark when we returned for Farmer's Market night.  Higuera Street is closed off to traffic for six blocks so that the various stands can be set up.  There are 120 vendors setting up each Thursday evening.  The market is open from 6 pm to 9 pm and local shops extend hours for your shopping pleasure.

This is an interesting place to do some serious people-watching, in addition to all of the wonderful things you can buy.  They have several vegetable stands with items from local farms....even in the winter months.  When we return on our September trip to the central coast, even more wonderful produce items will be available for purchase.
You can buy beautiful fresh flowers at the market.  There are also a couple of bakery stands with fresh bread, pies or muffins.

Of course, this being California, there is the usual assortment of "interesting folks" doing their own thing.  There was a man standing on the sidewalk reading loudly from the Bible to no one in particular.  There was the balloon man making balloon figures for the kids.  There are booths representing the major political parties (no comment from me on political events), planned parenthood, spiritual readings, a rock climbing wall, 3 different music groups to listen to, plus several restaurants that bring out massive BBQ pits or grills for your dinner choices.  I'll post on our choice tomorrow.

It was a nice evening, and our last opportunity to go to the Farmer's Market on this trip.  We will be pulling out of Pismo Coast Village next Wednesday morning.

Until next time....so long for now!

California does have its share of "characters". I can't wait to get there!

Another place we'll have to check out next year! It looks, and sounds, a bit like the Street Fair that Palm Springs has every Thursday night - it's loaded with odd characters too!

I've been reading you blog for awhile now and have found it interesting. I've especially been entertained by your exploration of my home area. I live in San Luis Obispo and sometimes I forget how nice a place it is until you see it through someone else's eyes. thanks for the blog, hope you enjoy the rest of your stay in San Luis.

Thanks for the comment, Robin. We really enjoy coming to the central coast area. We never tire of being here! We'll be back again in September, after a trip to Florida.
